What counts as an emergency

Severe pain or pain that keeps you awake, facial swelling or an abscess, a tooth broken or displaced by a knock, bleeding that won't stop, or a lost filling, crown or bracket that's bothering you. If you have a high fever or the swelling makes it hard to swallow or breathe, go to a hospital emergency department: Hospital Clínic is just minutes away.

What to do on your way

If a tooth has been knocked out, pick it up by the crown without touching the root, don't rub it, and keep it in milk or saline; the sooner you arrive, the better the chance of saving it. For pain, you can apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek. Avoid applying heat or placing aspirin directly on the gum.

How we treat you

First we relieve the pain and control any infection. Then we explain what happened and what definitive treatment you need, with a clear quote, so you can decide calmly.

Emergencies in children

Knocks to the mouth are common in childhood. If your child knocks a baby tooth or an adult tooth, call us straight away: we'll check the tooth, bone and soft tissues and explain what to watch for over the next few days. An adult tooth that has been knocked out completely has a better chance of being saved if it's repositioned within the first hour, so don't wait. We handle these emergencies with the same calm and patience as all our children's visits.
